Closer vs closer together

Is together optional?

1 Adultery in their relationship has brought the 2 closer together. They may have strayed at one point but they are now closer than ever.

Thanks

I would include together . "), so it seems more complete to answer that question either by using together or to each other or to one another . You can omit together without making the sentence ungrammatical, but it's better if you include it.

I would include together.

The question is "closer to what?" (or "closer to whom?"), so it seems more complete to answer that question either by using together or to each other or to one another.

In the first sentence, "together" is optional, but I wouldn't use it in the second - "closer together than ever" sounds a bit awkward.
