Vocabulary

Close up/ close down

1. close up
2. close down

I found the meanings of #1 and #2 are the similar.

My dictionary says #1 means closing a store for a short period time wihile #2 means shut down (permanatly?).

What I was wondering is if the preposition up and down is something to do with the meaning when they are used with close.
(e.g,, closing the shutter upwards?????? closing the shutter downwards????) If my guess is not correct, have the meanings of #1 and #2 got to do with something? (I mean the origin of the meaning)

(I mean the origin of the meaning) Most likely the meanings developed through accidents of the history of the English language rather than through anything logical.
