Hi! When I had just started school we had desks with a kind of a flat box inside, to put our books and things in. You could flip open the whole top of the desk and in that way get access to the box.

I think these might be instructions given by a teacher to his/her pupils - but some years ago.

"Open your desks and take your English book page ***". The books were stored inside the desk, nad the kids used to write on the top/lid of their desk.

"Lid" seems redundant. It seems enough to say "open/close the desk".
