close but not too close?

Is there any grammatical problem with the sentence below?
"They stayed at a motel which was close to the downtown but not too close."
The book I'm reading says 'but' should be removed, but I don't understand why. It sounds completely correct to my ears! Please help me out. Thanks in advance.
