Close adherence//Sticking closely to a study plan

Close adherence to a study plan usually helps Cheryl get great marks.

Hi,

Is it the same to say "sticking closely to" instead of "close adherence to" in the above?

Besides, is "marks" in the above equal to "points" or "grades?" Thanks.
