Climb the Everest

Hi

I have found this sentence in a dictionary:

"They failed in their attempt to climb the Everest"

I thought we don't use the define article before mountain names.

Is that a mistake?

Thanks!

Yes, it's a mistake.

(The only way it could possibly be correct is, unusually, if "the Everest" is used as a metaphor for something difficult or daunting, but there is no indication that this was the intention.)
