Hi, everyone!!
I have following underlined sentence in question;
"I was only six years old, but I can still remember how my mother had been asking me for two hours to get ready.
It was not the shower that made me disobey her words; it was the lavender sweater which made me so itchy!"
While I analyze the structure of above sentence is "it cleft one combined with not A but B", I guess various evaluations are possible as follows;
1. Since the emphasized part is a noun (=the shower) in the cleft sentence, above one should be corrected into;
"It was not the shower but the lavender sweater which made me so itchy that made me disobey her words!"
2. If we extra-pose long part of "but B", it should be read into;
"It was not the shower that made me disobey her words<;> (or, but) the lavender sweater which made me so itchy!"
In this case, the omitting of 'it was' before 'the lavender sweater' is obligatory?
3. The sentence standing alone as above is correct, because "it" as a pronoun represents "the thing which made
me disobey her words".
Your kind clarifications with another option, if any, will be much appreciated on which evaluation is the most suitable!
Always thanking for your support and best RDGS,
" The sentence is basically flawed. It makes no sense. You could use this: It was not the harsh lye soap but the lavender sweater which made me so itchy.
