Hi,
1) "I'll buy the decorations when they go on clearance in January." (Their price will be reduced.) Is this something I could only hear in the US or is it also used in British English?
2) Could I use 'infer' in the following example?
"I am pretty sure that they must have inferred that he was beating her after listening to the records they got from wiretapping their apartment."
"They must have inferred that they had a tumultuous relationship from the tapped telephone."
Thank you.
1. This would be said in the US, and it would surely be understood in the UK (Brits understand everything in American English, but not so the other way around). 2.

2. Both sentences are grammatical, but these would only be used by someone connected with law enforcement.
