Clear of something

'Play clear of the roads!' - How does it sound? Is it a normal way to tell a kid to play away from the roads? I ran into that meaning of clear today and I know that it means 'not near something', but it still sounds weird, and I wanted to make sure I use it properly. Thanks for help)
