Clear Benches

There is this articles:

"When Aaron Brooks swept in for the basket that cleared the benches with 2:46 left, he let a smile stretch across his face from one of the court to the other and back again."

What is "clear the benches" here? "Clear the benches" is used when there is a fight in a sports contest and the reserve players sitting on their benches get on the field/court to join the melee. But in the current example, there was no fights.
