clean designs

Finland does have its own homegrown talent, however, Alvar Aalto, who was born in western Finland, has been called the "the father of Finnish design." Aalt likd simple, clean designs, and he once said, "We should work for simple, good undecorated things."

I find "clean design" very abstact. Could you define it in a few words? Thanks.
