Clean and Clean up

What's the difference between "clean up" and "clean"?

There are many words in English which are the same when another word like "up, out, off" is attached to them.

Top answer

Clean up implies tidying, picking up, throwing away trash, etc. as well as actually cleaning things. Clean (used loosely) may include these things, but does not have to.

Clean by itself means remove dirt from, but if you "clean" your house it may well involve picking up and putting away as well as strictly cleaning things.
