Clauses

Can a dependent clause be written between two independent clauses?

Example: I don't remember the first day, the day that I was born, but it should have been a portent of things to come.

I understand I can just remove the comma after day, but it changes the rhythm. I can also put a period after day and make another sentence with the dependent clause as a lead in. Again, it changes the rhythm.

Here is a pattern that fits your descripton:

I don't remember that first day because I was just a new-born baby, but it should have been a portent of things to come.
