A clause is a sequence of words that has a subject and verb, and expresses a complete thought.
Let's look at a few sentences:

I am Sam. (This sentence has one clause. It is called the main clause. The subject is "I" and the verb is "am". Every sentence has a main clause. A main clause is an independent clause because it can stand alone by itself. )

I am Sam and you are Mary. (This sentence has 2 main clauses, joined by "and")

I am the girl who wears glasses. (This sentence has 2 clauses; 1) I am the girl 2) who wears glasses. The first clause is the main clause. The second clause is a dependent clause. It is not independent. )

When we went to the store, we bought eggs. (This sentence has 2 clauses; 1) When we went to the store 2) we bought eggs. The second clause is the main clause. The first clause is a dependent clause. )
