Clause problem!

The teacher asked how Tom who was absent was.

Here, in the sentence the phrase 'who was absent' makes it so clumsy , especially because of the repetition of 'was'. Is there any way to say it differently while keeping the two ideas( teacher's question and Tom's absence) in one sentence ?

Please, help.
