hi,

well... 'jack' is the subject-S, 'had run down the whole business' is predicate.

subject is a noun proper.

as every predicate consist of predicator, object, adverbs and more elements, this one consists of:

'had run down' is predicator.*i.e. a verb

'the whole business' - object-O (what did he run down?)

in the sentence :

Jack had
