Please name how this clause functions in this sentence?

Is it grammatical in a formal sense or perhaps just in a colloquial sense?

It seems adverbial to me. It is in fact a rather formal structure, nowadays at least, But complain as people did = Although people complained Cf: Try as I might, I couldn't open the chest, etc.

It seems adverbial to me. It is in fact a rather formal structure, nowadays at least,

But complain as people did = Although people complained

Cf: Try as I might, I couldn't open the chest, etc.

It seems this one is harder to expand reword as a adverbial clause, due to the existence of might:

Although I might tried, I couldn't...

Interesting to learn it is formal.
