We have watered down a rigid training . . . until we now have an educational diet in many of our public high schools that nourishes neither the classes nor the masses

I suspect that the class actually refers to 'students".
Regarding the logic relationship between "a rigid training" and "an educational diel".
Because "we" now have an educational diet, so 'we" no more have to water down a rigid training. Still, in many of our public high schools the diet nourishes neither the classes nor the masses
That is, the "diet" refers to "the watered down training that originally was rigid".
Am I on the right track?
