Clarification on comma usage

Which of these is right?

1)How many times have you wanted to split the screen into half so that you could have two different windows in each half of the screen?

2)How many times have you wanted to split the screen into half, so that you could have two different windows in each half of the screen?

In the second sentence I put a comma after the word "half".

Please explain the reason too. Thanks

Technically, there is no need for the comma, but many writers will include one as a signal for the reader to pause.

In the sentence with the comma, the second part reads as an additional piece of information or an afterthought. Without the comma, both parts seem equally important. Others may think differently.

. . . so that you could have two different windows in each half of the screen?

I take this to mean you will have a total of 4 windows, ie 2 in each half.

Is this what you mean? Or do you mean a total of 2 windows?
