Clarification about the adverb phrase

Hi,

Just check this sentence: He saw a new world spread about him.

I can see two verbs in this sentence - saw, spread. Is 'spread about him' acting as an adverb phrase describing the verb 'saw'? Also is 'about him' describing spread?

I am not sure whether to analyze the above sentence as:

He saw something spread about him.
or
He saw something about him.

Richards.
