Clangour

what does it mean?

the vibraiting clangour from the four great piston engines set teeth on edge and made an intolerable asault on cringing ear-drums.

does it come from clang?
and cringing ear-drums, can anybody elaborate it? does it mean to move away, sounds somewhat strange with ear-drums.

My interpretation would be that the vibrating jingling sound was a terrible suffering for people with delicate ear-drums.

thank you very much for your explanation.

i looked the word assault up in a dictionary. one of the menings is to have a bad effect on ears or nerves like an attack or attempt to destroy or to do harm and not only a physical assault.

as to the word cringing, i found the explanation as below:

to react to something with discomfort
