Claim that

Hi, I am back with a question. I looked up the word "claim" in Longman Dctionary and it says "claim = that" "Gould rejected claims that he had acted irresponsibly ", but the sentence behind "that" is just one act. Then, why "-s" is added to "claim" to make it plural. Is there a reason or meaning difference in using a singular form there? Thanks a million in advance.

Hi, The 's' indicates there were multiple claims. eg Maybe several people each made a claim. Or maybe there were claims that he acted irresponsibly in several different ways.
