Civilization's direction/orientation ?

Hello,

can you please help me? we had an argument with my teacher about the difference between the expression "civilization's direction" and "civilization's orientation". Is there any? if yes, what's the difference?

thanks a lot in advance.

Tricky one, but I perceive a difference. I think that a civilization's direction is the course of development it is following. For example, a civilization could be heading for democracy, or towards anarchy, or towards recognition of female bishops, or any other 'result'.

  • A civilization's orientation is more about the influences on it, where it aligns itself and postitions itself in the world.
  • For example, historically Australia's orientation has been towards the western European countries and particularly Britain, whereas a lot of Australians now feel that its orientation should be to the geographically closer Eastern countries such as Japan.
