Citing a source within parentheses

I am using parentheses in a formal science paper, and I need to cite a source within the parentheses. Do I put the citation in brackets? Do science papers have the same rule as other types of writing for "no parehtheses within parentheses"?

Different science journals have different style guidelines. There is no one format for citations which is used universally. If you intend to publish your paper, you should either consult with someone from the journal in which you wish to publish or examine and imitate the style used in a recent issue.
