Christmas

Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to meet this time in Europe, but I'm sure there'll be another opportunity in the near future. School starts a week from now, so I had to cut my trip short and return to California early. Hope all is well w/ you and your family and have a joyous Christmas week along with a thrilling NYE!

Please proofread this short paragraph for me. Thank you.

Looks fine if informality is what you're going for. The only thing I'd change is "Unfortunately" to "I'm sorry".

What's the difference between informal and formal writing?

Thank you.

Among other things (like stylistic differences) that are significantly more difficult to enumerate, in formal writing you would never use "w/" to mean "with" and you wouldn't abbreviate New Year's Eve.
