Chose correct sentence

Please help me to know which of the following two sentences is correct. Thanks.

(1) I got a letter from a pen pal in America yesterday. And it took me three hours to write back.

(2) I got a letter from a pen pal in America yesterday. And it took me three hours writing back

But I can't understand that the following sentences (1) and (2) can use both Ving and to V. Why can't the original sentence use "writing back" instead of "to write back"?

(1)It's importand getting/to get the job done.
(2)It's always dangerous talking/to talkabout politics with him.

I have a question about the sentence that Casi gave: Writing back took me three hours.
I wonder if I can change "Writing back" to "To write back"? When "to Write back" is used? I would like to know the difference between the infinitive and the gerund when used as the subject of a sentence. Thanks a lot.

#1 is correct, because 'complain' is the verb. Your #2 sentence has no verb; 'complaint' is a noun.
