Choosing the best option

- Blacky bear didn't take a bath everyday because he was (afraid of/ terrified of/ scared of) water.

Hello:

I've been asked to choose the word that fits the best in the sentence, from the choices given in the brackets. I think they all mean the same thing there and can be used interchangeably there. Could you please confirm I am right or not?

Thank you!

Laborious Could you please confirm I am right or not? "Afraid of" is best. It is the simple meaning you need to set the stage, even if all else were equal.

  • "Scared of" sounds a bit like baby-talk, and "terrified" does not go with "of" perfectly well, although that collocation is indeed not infrequently used.
  • By the way, it's "every day", two words.
