Choosing a reporting form.

Which form of reporting would you use here and why?

On the phone.

Tim: How are you?
Jake: I'm really depressed.

----

Later:

Tim (to a friend): Jake called this morning. He's really depressed/He says he's really depressed.

This is a bit like asking whether, when you want someone to remove their coat, you say:

Take your coat off

or

Take off your coat

I would say: "Jake called this morning and said he's feeling great. That cocaine he got is the best he's ever found so far. We're gonna sell it in Miami..."
Note: the fact he was depressed turned out to be a joke and so there's no reason to mention that.

Moral: how do I know what I would

And I guess some would have an answer for even that. What's your answer to the thread question?

<There are lots of ways to report the fact he was javascript:void(0),>

Cannyou give us examples of a few of them?

<I have no reason to choose one instead of another.>

OK, thanks.

Jack called...

He said he's depressed.
He said he was depressed.
He is depressed.
He was depressed.
He says he's depressed.
Etc.

Or just... Jack is depresse

I see only two main ways there. i.e. one using verbs of saying and the others are examples of reported events.

With "Jake says he depressed" the source is clear, but with "He's depressed" the source is not clear. If you want to make the source clear, use the first example.
