“18. Each salesperson ______ the manager chooses to recognize for outstanding service will receive a gift certificate.
(A) whose
(B) whom
(C) for which
(D) in that
(Answer: B)” ((TOMATO BASIC))
I agree with the above book that B is correct.
Which verb do you think has “each salesperson” as its object – “chooses”, or “recognize”?
I think “recognize” has “each salesperson” as its object.
I paraphrased the original sentence into the following:
PARAPHRASE #1. “The manager recognizes each salesperson for his or her outstanding service, and the salesperson recognized by the manager will receive a gift certificate.”
And think the following paraphrase has some mistakes:
PARAPHRASE #2. “The manager chooses each salesperson for his or her outstanding service, and the salesperson chosen by the manager will receive a gift certificate.”
If you think PAPHRASE #1 is correct, then you think “recognize” has “each salesperson” as its object.
If you think PAPHRASE #2 is correct, then you think “chooses” has “each salesperson” as its object.
What do you think is correct paraphrase? #1, or #2?
Thanks in advance
