Choose vs Pick out.

In what situation would you use each of them? "Choose" or "Pick out".
I think "choose" is more conceptual whereas "pick out" is for real things, like shopping. Could you please clarify the difference?

To me, there is no difference in meaning between the two. If there is, it's mind-bogglingly subtle and not worth even thinking about. Also, I think the particle out is always unnecessary. Just pick would do just as well.
