In the sentence:

The verb here needs to agree with the subject, but as the sentence is in the passive voice you have to think which word(s) that applies to.

If you rearrange it, 'The poet's own religious views [...] implicit in the poem's opening lines.'

That should help you to see that it is a plural subject - '... viewS' - which requires the plural verb 'are' to work with it.
