Choose him as teacher

-He went to many countries and saw eighty emperors or so; those who __ him as teacher numbered three thousand.

What is the verb referring to 'choose someone as teacher in a polite way'? CHOOSE is not the word. When you are up to choose whatever you want, it is CHOOSE; but whether that teacher accepts you as his student is not decided by you. Those students were in a subordinate position to the teacher and they had to send up gifts to him upon their first meeting.

Thank you.

I don't think there's a word that fits that sentence structure.

those who begged/applied to be his student numbered three thousand
those who entreated/beseeched him to be his student numbered three thousand
