Choke vs. gag

Hi there,

What's the difference between 'choke' and 'gag'? Do they both mean 'can't breathe', or each has slightly different meaning? Thanks.

No, they are different. If you accidentally inhale a piece of food instead of swallowing it, you will choke. You will be unable to breathe, unless someone saves you by doing the Heimlich maneuver or something like that.

You can also use 'to gag' as a transitive verb, so it depends on the context. If you gag someone you prevent them from speaking. This can be physical, by tying a gag (a piece of cloth) across their mouth, or by use of another force such as a legal injuction. A contract might have a 'gagging clause' which prevents someone from discussing a particular topic.
