Choice of word -"promote" or "advertise"

If it wasn't to popularize something for monetary purposes, then which term should be more fitting?
For example, if someone's having an art exhibition and wants people to come to their solo exhibition for free, should that be called "advertise" or "promote"?

Really lost here, or is there any other better choice?
