Choice of word

Another dilemma here.
What if I were to tell people to base their judgement on the actual objects/matter that they can see in real situations?
For example, if I were to tell customers that a document can't be the exact guide because the products mentioned in it might not be exactly the same as they are in reality. So what's the choice of word?
Can I tell them to "refer" to the actual objects? (Maybe it's just me, but "referring" to something usually means that something is a text-based source of information, am I right?)
