(2) I don't like "b," but I can't explain why.

(3) Therefore, I choose "a."

(i) He worked hard last term. Sadly, he has not worked hard this term SO FAR (up to this time). But who knows? There is still time left in this term.

You need a. hasn't worked.

b. doesn't work is habitual, so you don't want that. To use the present, you would need "but he isn't working hard this term".
