Chipping away at the wickets

Deccan Chargers have folded like a pack of cards. A lot was expected of Gilly but he failed to deliver yet again. Mumbai Indians were sharp in the field and accurate with the ball as they kept chipping away at the wickets regularly. The win ensures that the Mumbai Indians have virtually booked a place in the semis. DC have lost yet another game comprehensively and it must be a worrying sign for them. They have to now win 5 out of their last 6 games if they are to entertain any chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. Join us shortly for the presentation.

Could you please explain to me what "chipping away at" means here?

Even if you explain to me the general meaning of "chipping away at", I can try to understand it as a whole.

Top answer

"chipping away at the wickets" means steadily taking wickets -- not all in a great rush, but regularly enough to make inroads into the batting team. The analogy is with chipping (taking chips off) a physical object, a process by which small repeated actions eventually have a large cumulative effect.
