Chin-ups vs. pull-ups

I know that fitness people (or whoever) often talk about chin-ups when the exercise is done with a supinated grip (palms facing toward your body) and pull-ups when the exercise is done with a pronated grip (palms facing away from your body). But is one or the other the default term that includes the both grips?

In the US today, the terms "chin-ups" and "pull-ups" are synonymous, and can be done with palms facing outward or inward. This is a personal preference.
