Children - some children

1 Some children were playing in the park.
2 Children were playing in the park.

What's the differencebetween the two? What does "some" add to the sentence? In which situation sould we use one rather than the other? thanks.

In this context, I take 'some' to be the equivalent of 'a few'. Without 'some' there is no estimate of the number of children. CJ
