Does this not have something to do with singular and plural?

Boss' isn't English. The genitive is usually formed as follows:

Singular: This boy's book is on the table.

Plural: These boys' books are on the table.

However, child has an irregular plural, children. As there is no s at the end, it is added for the genitive but the apostrophe precedes it:

Singular: This child's book is on t
