Chicken Laid Eggs

Please correct the following sentences. Thank you.

But, that was a month ago. Now chickens had laid eggs, and I witnessed the spectacle yesterday when I was riding in an auto. Amazingly, it went swiftly but smoothly as the driver, feeling conscious of my discomfort, drove the vehicle carefully, avoiding big speed bumps, potholes and the heaps of sand and gravel remaining at the sides of the roads.

Surprise slapped me blue when I looked around the place I was sitting in. I t was kept clean and tidy. I got a whiff of good smell wafting around my seat. The driver must have sprayed some perfume, I thought. Half-a –dozen branded packaged water bottles was kept in a make-shift stand behind the passenger seat. The FM radio was on. But, it wasn’t blaring as its wont in the autos in the past. It sang mildly in toned-down tunes, which were more compatible to ears. Hanging from the door frame was a pouch full of tissue papers kept for public use.
