Hi there,
what does "chew the tongue" mean? I came across the terms, the context is that a girl is singing and a guy is chewing his tongue. with thanks.

  • Kevin[/nq] Can't say I've heard it before, but perhaps it's another way of saying 'biting his tongue' Perhaps the singing was so bad he had to employ self restraint not to pass comment on it.

Can't say I've heard it before, but perhaps it's another way of saying 'biting his tongue'

I suspect it's a literal translation from another language; it is not an English idiom.

The only English language refernce I can dig up is this bit of song lyric:

I think biting ones tongue refers to using the front teeth, and is a metaphor for not saying something when one wants to, but thinks he shouldn't.
