Whereas means: "in contrast or comparison with the fact that."
Example: You treat the matter lightly, whereas I myself was never more serious.
In everyday usage, I would say that "but" conveys the same meaning as "whereas", as long as "but" is used to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned.

To my mind, 'whereas' suggests a somewhat stronger contrast.
