(chess)sear

Hi.
"With his Bishop searing down the h1-a8 diagonal, White threatens to penetrate Black's position with Ra8."

What does sear mean here?

Thanks in advance!

I'll bet it's a typo for "staring". The word "searing" is nonsense there.
