(chess)reduced to

Hi.
May I replace 'reduced to' with 'forced to' in:
"Instead Black is reduced to reacting to White's threats.'

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Forced to and reduced to do not have the same meaning.

Have you looked up these words in your dictionary?

I looked at the meaning of 'reduced to':

reduce somebody to something

to force someone into a worse condition than usual

Sorry, please tell ne the difference.

My opinion is that 'reduce' does not necessarily include force; rather, it is a sort of erosion of options.

So it means 'ristricted to'?

That's closer, yes: restricted.

What's the difference between
Black is reduced to answering to Whites threats
and
He is forced to answering to Whites threats ?

Just answer, not 'answer to'.

Black is reduced to answering White's threats. Formerly, Black had other options. Now he does not.

Mr M already told you that 'force to' does not collocate with '-ing' verb forms.

He is forced to answer White's threats.
