Vocabulary

(chess)in front of

Hi.

Does 'in front of' mean in direct opposition (like North) or just in a forward direction with some divergence (North East, or West for example)?

Black obviously does not want his King lo be in front of the White King.

Thanks in advance

Those words do not express the idea. The Kings are opposite each other at the start of the game. "In front of" is clear in the context. It cannot mean "forward of but perhaps off to one side". "Out in front of" could mean that. He is talking about two Kings in a King-and-Rook endgame, and it is clear that he means that the Black King wants to be able to move forward, and he can't do that if he is

Right, but I'm saying that that's what "opposite" means. Two things could be across a dinner table from each other or across a river valley and be opposite one another. They have to be close to be in front of each other, and the two Kings are as close as two Kings can be.
