(chess)foil

Hi
To foil an attack means the same as making it a fruitless attempt, or there is some difference?

Thanks in advance

This is "foil" in its standard dictionary sense, e.g. "prevent (something considered wrong or undesirable) from succeeding" (http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/foil?q=foil)
