Typical backward pawns stuck on open files are the d6-**** in the Najdorf and the e6-**** in many French positions.

is trapped a synonym? More or less

How does 'trapped' differ from it? To me, 'trapped' suggests more that the ****'s situation is the result of clever play by the opponent.
