(chess) follow up

Hi.
How does 'follow up' differ from 'continue' in:
After White captures the pawn, he would follow up with e2-e4 to acquire a full pawn center.

?Thanks in advance

I am not a chess player so i don't know what they technically mean. But if we consider their general definition then there would be no confusion.
