Can anyone tell me whether this is the correct spelling for this farewell? Also, does anyone know it's actual meaning? I have always guessed it to mean travel cheerfully, but that is only a guess. Thanks.

We spell it cheerio, and the Shorter Oxford dictionary says: also cheero (which I've never heard or seen, but who am I?) 1910, from CHEER + y and O (interjection). A parting exclamation of encouragement.
